California Notary Exam Format

The California notary public examination is administered by the Secretary of State through approved testing vendors. Understanding the exam format will help you prepare effectively.

Exam Structure

The 15 pretest questions are used to evaluate potential future exam questions. You will not know which questions are scored and which are pretest, so answer all questions to the best of your ability.

Education Requirements

Before taking the exam, you must complete approved education:

• 6-hour notary education course

Renewal Applicants:

• 3-hour refresher course
• Must complete before commission expires

• No reference materials allowed during the exam
• Results are typically provided immediately after completion
