New York Notary Exam Format

The New York State notary public examination tests your knowledge of notary law, procedures, and responsibilities. Understanding the exam format will help you prepare effectively and pass on your first attempt.

Exam Structure

Questions are mixed throughout the exam and not divided into separate sections. You won't know if you barely passed or aced it—the result is simply "Pass" or "Fail."

Important: The exam now includes questions on modern notarization methods:

New York legalized remote notarization in 2022, and the exam has been updated to reflect these changes. Make sure your study materials cover electronic notarization!

Testing Locations

Exam Day Tips

• Arrive early at walk-in locations (they can get busy)
• Bring valid photo ID (driver's license, passport, etc.)
• No study materials allowed in the exam room
• Read each question carefully before answering
• Pace yourself — 40 questions in 60 minutes = 1.5 minutes per question

After the Exam

Your passing exam result is valid for 2 years. If you don't complete your notary application within that time, you'll need to retake and pass the exam again.
