Getting Your CPhT: PTCE Basics

To earn PTCB's Certified Pharmacy Technician credential you must:

  • Live in the United States or its territories
  • Complete a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program (completion within 60 days of applying also counts; a pharmacy degree is accepted in place of a program) or have at least 500 hours of work experience as a pharmacy technician, complete when you apply
  • Fully disclose any criminal and State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure actions
  • Follow PTCB's certification policies
  • Pass the PTCE

The application and exam cost $129. The PTCE has 90 multiple-choice questions (80 scored, 10 unscored); plan on a 2-hour appointment that includes a 5-minute tutorial, the 1 hour 50 minute exam, and a 5-minute survey. It is given in person at Pearson test centers, the passing scaled score is 1,400 on a 1,000-1,600 scale, and official results usually reach your PTCB Account within three weeks. PTCB reports that 69% of PTCEs passed in 2025.

Does Certification Raise Pay?

BLS reports pay for all pharmacy technicians and does not split it by certification status, so there is no official "CPhT premium." What the sources do say:

  • BLS notes that some states and employers require pharmacy technicians to be certified, and that certification may make it easier to get a job even where it is not required.
  • NHA's 2025 Industry Outlook reports that 98% of employers require or encourage certification for pharmacy technicians.
  • The PTCE costs $129 to apply and test (PTCB), and PTCB charges $55 every two years to recertify.

Pay by Work Setting

Industry (BLS)Median Annual Wage (May 2025)Share of Jobs (2025)
Hospitals; state, local, and private$50,76018%
Ambulatory healthcare services$48,8605%
General merchandise retailers$48,1509%
Grocery and specialty food retailers$41,4308%
Pharmacies and drug retailers$39,24051%

Hospital vs Retail

The May 2025 hospital median was $11,520 higher than the median in pharmacies and drug retailers (about 29% more). BLS notes that hospital technicians prepare a greater variety of medications, such as intravenous medications, and that pharmacies may be open at all hours, so nights and weekends can be part of the job.

What Pharmacy Technicians Do

BLS lists these typical duties for pharmacy technicians, all under the supervision of a pharmacist who must review prescriptions before they are dispensed:

  • Collect information needed to fill a prescription from patients or health professionals
  • Measure amounts of medication for prescriptions
  • Package and label prescriptions
  • Organize inventory and alert pharmacists to any shortages of medications or supplies
  • Accept payment for prescriptions and process insurance claims
  • Enter patient information, including any prescriptions taken, into a computer system
  • Answer phone calls from customers
  • Arrange for customers to speak with pharmacists about medications or health matters

BLS adds that technicians in hospitals and other medical facilities prepare a greater variety of medications, such as intravenous medications, and may make rounds to dispense medications to patients. In many states, trained technicians can also give vaccines under pharmacist supervision.

Work Environment and Schedules

According to BLS, pharmacy technicians spend most of the workday standing or walking and usually work as part of a team with other pharmacy staff and healthcare providers. Most work full time, but part-time work is common. Because pharmacies may be open at all hours, technicians may have to work nights or weekends, which is worth asking about when you compare job offers.

Career Advancement Paths for CPhTs

The CPhT is your starting point. PTCB's other credentials:

PTCB CredentialRequirements
CSPT (Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician)Active PTCB CPhT plus either completion of/enrollment in a PTCB-recognized CSPT program AND 1 year of full-time continuous CSP experience, OR 3 years of full-time continuous CSP experience within the last 8 years; $199 total ($50 application + $149 exam), plus the required competency attestation and exam pass; recertify every year
CPhT-Adv (Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician)Active PTCB CPhT, at least 3 years of technician experience within the past 8 years, and four PTCB certificate programs (or three plus the CSPT); no exam or extra fee
Assessment-based certificatesEleven programs, including Billing and Reimbursement, Hazardous Drug Management, Medication History and Technician Product Verification; the Nonsterile Compounding certificate exam, for example, costs $89

BLS notes that, with additional training and experience, technicians can move into roles such as sterile compounding technician, nuclear pharmacy technician or medication history technician, and that some become trainers or supervisors. Neither BLS nor PTCB publishes pay figures for each credential.

Becoming a Pharmacist

Some CPhTs go on to pharmacy school. BLS lists a May 2025 median of $140,910 for pharmacists, who need a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.

Maximize Your CPhT Earnings: 5 Strategies

1. Get Certified (PTCE or ExCPT)

Some states and employers require certification. PTCB charges $129 to apply and take the PTCE; education, renewal or other requirements may add costs. NHA's ExCPT has its own eligibility rules and price, so do not assume that the PTCE fee applies to both exams.

2. Target Higher-Paying Settings

Hospitals had the highest May 2025 median of the industries BLS lists ($50,760).

3. Build Toward PTCB's Advanced Credentials

The CSPT covers sterile compounding, and the CPhT-Adv recognizes experienced technicians who hold several PTCB certificates.

4. Negotiate Using Market Data

Bring BLS national, state and metro data (from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program) for your setting when interviewing or asking for a raise.

5. Look at Specialty Roles

BLS lists sterile compounding, nuclear pharmacy and medication history as specialized roles technicians can move into with more training.

Keeping Your CPhT Active

PTCB requires CPhTs to recertify every 2 years with continuing education. The recertification application fee is $55, a late application processing fee of $25 applies after the deadline, and reinstating a lapsed CPhT costs $95. CSPTs recertify every year. Budget for these fees, and ask your employer whether it pays for CE or renewal.

Qualities Employers Look For

BLS names six qualities that matter in this job:

  • Communication skills -- explaining clearly to pharmacists, doctors, and customers
  • Customer-service skills -- much of the day is spent helping customers
  • Detail orientation -- errors in filling prescriptions can cause serious health problems
  • Interpersonal skills -- working with patients who may be sick or in pain, and with the pharmacy team
  • Math skills -- calculating dosages and other pharmacy math
  • Organizational skills -- balancing work delegated by pharmacists with customer needs

How to Check Pay Where You Live

National medians hide local differences. BLS publishes state, metropolitan, and nonmetropolitan wage estimates for pharmacy technicians (SOC 29-2052) through its Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) program, including maps and area profiles at data.bls.gov/oesprofile. CareerOneStop, which BLS links to, also has a salary tool that searches wages by ZIP code and lists state licensing boards. Use those local figures, not the national median, when you negotiate or compare offers.

Job Outlook: Pharmacy Technician Demand

Outlook FactorData (BLS)
Projected Job Growth (2025-2035)6% (faster than average)
Employment Change (2025-2035)+30,100 jobs
Annual Job OpeningsAbout 44,700

Why Demand Is Growing

BLS gives these reasons:

  1. Older population -- Older people typically use more prescription medicines.
  2. Chronic disease -- Growing rates of conditions such as diabetes and hypertension increase demand for prescriptions.
  3. Expanded technician roles -- As pharmacists spend more time on patient care, technicians take on tasks such as collecting patient information, handling prescription transfers, and verifying other technicians' work.
